Bob Rodenberger on Swapping Cull Cows for New Cows with No Out-of-Pocket Costs

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

This past week, the Oklahoma City sale ran about 8,000 head, and Rodenberger’s sale ran 1,300 compared to 4,700 the previous week; however, there was no decline in the market.

Notably, the salvage value of cows is remarkable, as is that of five-weight calves. “If you take a killing cow and her calf and sell them, you can go buy these $3,000 bred cows and not have to come up with any out-of-pocket money,” Rodenberger said. “You can swap for even money, and we’ve never been able to do that before. That is an unheard-of deal.”

He noted four-weight steers at $1,800, some six-weights brought $2,000 – $2,100. Although it is certainly a seller’s market, buyers can protect their margins with Livestock Risk Protection.

Rodenberger expects more big numbers in Oklahoma City on Monday due to milder weather, and he is anticipating his company to sell more than the last two weeks combined.

“I’ve had several people postpone due to the weather the last two weeks,” he said. “They are coming this week so Oklahoma City ought to have a big run.”
