Today, Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) introduced the Protect American Election Administration Act, which blocks the private takeover of the government election administration, protects the voting laws of the individual states, prevents private funding for ballot harvesting or curing, and prevents the use of election infrastructure to conduct ideologically motivated voter outreach campaigns. The legislation has six original co-sponsors, Reps. Virginia Foxx (NC-05), Jake Ellzey (TX-06), Claudia Tenney (NY-24), Ryan Zinke (MN-01), John Carter (TX-31), and Tracey Mann (KS-01).
“As Americans, voting is not only our civic duty granted by the Founding Fathers, but also our power. It allows us to voice our opinion, serves as a tool for change, and shapes our great nation. Yet, after the issues we saw in the 2020 presidential election, confidence in our election systems has decreased significantly,” said Congressman Cole. “The Protect American Election Administration Act of 2025 would help to repair this broken trust. We must ensure that Americans have the confidence that their vote truly counts, as our election systems are truly the bedrock of our republic.”
Background:
During the 2020 election, election administration in the United States was politically influenced because of multi-millions in private spending by private individuals with political agendas. In return, the private funds expended by many election administration offices were used to implement insecure voting methods, harvest or cure ballots, and conduct extensive outreach campaigns to benefit the donors’ preferred candidates. These funds were targeted in Democratic counties to increase turnout in areas that would be beneficial to Democratic candidates.
