Perennial Films announced today the premiere of their feature documentary Prairie Prophecy about the life and work of Wes Jackson, co-founder of The Land Institute. The premiere will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the historic Stiefel Theater, 151 S Santa Fe Ave, Salina, KS 67401. The film will start at 6:00 pm, followed by a Q & A.
Wes Jackson, the most important environmentalist few people have heard of, and co-founder of The Land Institute, has spent his life pioneering a bold new approach to agriculture that challenges humanity to rethink its relationship with the earth. Through his groundbreaking work in perennial polyculture and Natural Systems Agriculture, Jackson has inspired a global movement toward sustainability and ecological harmony.
“From the very first time I met Wes, I was hooked.” said, Michael Johnson Director and Perennial Films Executive Producer, “Wes Jackson masterfully fuses science and origin stories by recognizing that both serve as powerful ways of understanding the world—science through observation and evidence, and origin stories through meaning and identity. He weaves them together by grounding his ecological insights in deep historical and cultural contexts, showing that our agricultural and environmental challenges are not just technical problems but part of a larger human narrative. This allows him to connect modern sustainability efforts with ancient wisdom, making complex scientific ideas more accessible and deeply resonant. No other film takes on Wes’ bold re-thinking of how agriculture needs to change at the systemic level.”
The Prairie Prophecy film is both a tribute to Wes Jackson’s enduring legacy and a call to action for the next generation of farmers, scientists, and environmental stewards. As climate change accelerates, Jackson’s ideas remain a beacon of hope, demonstrating that sustainable solutions are not only possible but essential for the survival of life on earth.
“We are elated to witness Dr. Wes Jackson, one of our most distinguished alumni, a former coach and faculty member, and a faculty emeritus, being celebrated and recognized through this remarkable film. This film stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy and his pushing for humanity to wrestle honestly with difficult ecological realities and the associated cascading issues.” Matt Thompson, Ph.D., President of Kansas Wesleyan University. The Prairie Prophecy movie will start at 6:00 pm followed by a question-and-answer panel with Wes Jackson, other experts and the filmmakers.
All guests will enjoy the red-carpet entrance and a pre and post-film program.
