On Tuesdays, Senior Farm and Ranch Broadcaster, Ron Hays, visits with Ben Hale of Western Livestock Auctions as he talks about the latest in the markets and more. Established in 1995, Western has grown into a multi-generational family-owned and operated business and stands as a symbol of tradition, excellence, and a deep-rooted passion for the cattle industry. Western Livestock Auctions operates the Western Livestock Commission Firm, which sells cattle on Mondays and Tuesdays. They also operate the livestock auction markets in Woodward, Comanche and Knoxville, Iowa.
More than 3,000 head sold on Monday in Oklahoma City and according to Hale, it was a good market. He described five-weight steers that brought $3.60, six-weight steers as bringing $3.24, nine-weight steers at $2.48, and mid-eight-weight heifers that brought $2.41-$2.44.
“It was a strong market even though it was a lighter run,” Hale said. “With the board down like it was, I would call it even softer than last week, but it is still an awfully stout market, especially with the weather that they are talking about coming in.”
He said sellers are pleased with the prices they got, and with having fewer animals to care for during the extreme cold front expected to move in tonight.
Woodward’s sale is closed today but will resume on Thursday with yearlings and calves that were already consigned to the Tuesday sale, then finishing with cows. Comanche’s Wednesday sale has also been canceled due to the extreme cold expected.
