Bob Rodenberger Observes Strong Performance and Steady Demand in Cattle Markets

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is back talking with Bob Rodenberger, a Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing partner, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets.

Rodenberger discussed the cattle market’s strong performance, with prices at their highest since 2014 and 2015, even though the runs were lighter at Oklahoma City’s sale. The sale at Apache experienced better than average run,s with feeders of all sizes still in high demand.

“If you have an old cow and a calf, you can sell that pair and go buy a young cow with no extra money,” Rodenberger noted. “It’s the first time I’ve seen that since I’ve been in the business. Normally, you’d have to put $500 to $1,000 with that old pair to go buy a young cow, but right now, you can swap, even money.”

He advised cow-calf men to consider risk protection as demand remains steady. He also highlighted the current drought situation and the need for substantial rainfall from April to June to improve pasture conditions and hay production.

Despite challenges, the market’s positive outlook was discussed, with expectations of an 8,000-head run next week in Oklahoma City’s cattle sales.
