Ag Day at the Capitol: Oklahoma CattleWomen’s Association Plans Fun-Filled Kid’s Cattle Camp

Listen to KC Sheperd talking with Connie Tabor about Ag Day, Kids’ Cattle Camp, and more.

As Ag Day at the Capitol was being celebrated in Oklahoma City, Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Connie Tabor, president of the Oklahoma CattleWomen’s Association, which served Walking Tacos made with beef provided by the Oklahoma Beef Council.

“It’s nice for them to grab it and just walk around the Capitol with it, and have a good dose of beef,” she said, pointing out that it is Taco Tuesday.

The conversation moved to the inaugural Kid’s Cattle Camp that the Oklahoma CattleWomen’s Association has planned for the summer, which will have activities for children going into kindergarten through eighth grade during the 2025-2026 school year. It will be held at the Pawnee County Fairgrounds on June 7.

“They are going to learn about cattle,” Tabor shared. “They don’t have to know anything about them, but even if they do, they are going to get something out of this. It is going to talk more about where your beef comes from and how you get it there. They’ll learn how we feed the cattle, take care of them through relay races and things like that. There will be a lot of fun and games with it.”

Children will also learn about the inner workings of cattle. They will be divided into age groups to ensure that the curriculum is age-appropriate. The dairy industry will also be discussed and punctuated by homemade ice cream for all who attend.

“We are going to have some animals there,” Tabor shared. “There is going to be some equipment for them to look at to see what we use on the farms, so they’ll get a little bit of everything involved with taking care of cattle. They’ll get to pet one and some will probably get licked by one!”

Parents can register their children to attend at okcattlewomen.org under the events tab. It costs $20 for one child to attend and $10 for each additional sibling, which includes a hamburger lunch and a T-shirt for the kids. Tabor encouraged parents to email okcattlewomen@gmail.com if they have any issues with registration.

Additionally, the Oklahoma CattleWomen’s Association is looking forward to Beef Day at the Capitol, the annual Convention slated for July 24-26, and the American National CattleWomen’s Region 4 meeting to be held in Texas.

“We are always staying busy, always learning, and always promoting beef,” Tabor concluded.
