Introducing Jansen Shirley of the Alva FFA Chapter, Your 2025 Northwest Area Star in Agribusiness

Listen to KC Sheperd talking with Hayden Taylor ahead of the State FFA Convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report are spotlighting the 19 Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA, who are among the highest achievers in the organization.

The stars come from the five areas in four categories – Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness, and Star in Agricultural Production.

This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agribusiness in 2025.

One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 99th Oklahoma State FFA Convention, which will take place on May 6th and 7th in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This week, our coverage of the 2025 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists continues with Agribusiness competitor Jansen Shirley of the Alva FFA chapter representing the Northwest Area.

“My project is a custom haying business, where I custom bale for local farmers in my community,” Shirley described. “I decided to start my business because I looked at my community and what it needed, and I found a need for custom haying.”

She said that her biggest challenge is time management, so she can accurately tell farmers when she will be there to start baling and when she will finish, so they can begin retrieving their bales. She rents the equipment she uses from her father.

Shirley’s FFA career began with showing pigs and livestock judging, but has also included speech contests, vet science, and attending alumni camp and the Lead 360 Conference.

She plans to attend Oklahoma State University to major in Plant and Soil Science with an eye on becoming an Agronomist and running her family’s farm one day. She plans to continue baling hay for farmers in her community during the summers of her college years.
