OSU Extension is gearing up for one of its “favorite events of the year,” the “AgricultHER” conference, a unique agricultural conference specifically designed for women in rural areas. Moving to Wilburton, Oklahoma, this year, the conference promises a highly interactive and hands-on experience, distinguishing it from more traditional informational events.
Crystal Shipman with OSU Extension emphasized the event’s focus on accessibility and practical skills. “This conference is based on more hands-on opportunities, instead of just strictly networking and informational education,” Shipman explained. The decision to host the event in Wilburton underscores their commitment to serving ladies in rural communities.
One of the most anticipated and frequently requested sessions is “trailer backing.” “It’s a little hard to facilitate, so we are going to offer that at this conference,” Shipman said, adding, “At some point, you will be in a truck and trailer in an obstacle course.”

The conference kicks off with a keynote speaker from Mountain View Meats, who will share insights on marketing agricultural products, a topic that has gained significant traction with the rise of “farm to table” trends. An OSU Extension professional will follow, delving into specific marketing platforms and branding strategies.
Attendees can then break into a diverse range of sessions, each offering valuable, practical knowledge. These include:
- Food Labeling Laws: Addressing the often-confusing regulations with guidance from ODAFF (Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry).
- FAMACHA Certification: A crucial certification for sheep and goat producers focused on parasite management.
- Pecan Tree Grafting: A popular session led by an OSU pecan specialist, where participants will learn and perform grafting techniques.
- Cattle Handling: Emphasizing safety, especially for women who often have children “in tow” on the farm.
- Trailer Backing: The highly anticipated hands-on session.
- Food Preservation: Focusing on the popular technique of fermenting foods.
While the main registration deadline has passed, interested individuals can still register for a fee of $35. “I just can’t guarantee you a shirt at this point,” Shipman clarified, “I did order some extras, so you may luck into having the size that you need.” Registration details are available on the Facebook event page or by emailing Crystal Shipman directly.
The conference will be held at Eastern Oklahoma State College campus in Wilburton. Informational sessions will take place indoors in the Student Center ballroom, while the hands-on sessions will be conducted outdoors on the school farm. “We’ll have signs and everything out,” Shipman assured attendees.
The “AgricultHER” Conference promises to be a day of valuable learning, practical skill-building, and supportive networking for women in agriculture across Oklahoma.
