Service Oklahoma is warning citizens of a nationwide text message scam—also known as smishing—targeting Oklahomans by impersonating state agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles.
This morning, Service Oklahoma was made aware of fraudulent messages claiming recipients have unpaid traffic violations that must be resolved immediately to avoid penalties. These messages include suspicious links and threats such as license suspension, legal action and negative credit reporting.

These messages are not legitimate. They are part of a broader scam targeting individuals across the country. The senders are not affiliated with any Oklahoma state agency, and targeted phone numbers appear to be chosen at random.
Service Oklahoma reminds all customers:
- We do not contact individuals by text or phone to request payment or personal financial information.
- Our licensed operators also do not send payment requests by phone or text message.
If you receive a suspicious message:
- Do not click links or respond.
- Delete or report the text as spam.
- Do not share personal or financial information.
- If you clicked a link or submitted information, take steps immediately to secure your accounts.
