The monthly Crop Production Report was published by the USDA on June 12, and Oklahoma’s USDA State Statistician Troy Marshall went over the numbers as for Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, with our own Stevie White. As summer crops are still being planted, Winter Wheat was the lone star of this month’s report.
In the report, surveyed producers estimated what they thought wheat yields, production numbers, and harvested acres might look like as of June 1.
“One of the more interesting things about this month is we get more of that physical data that goes into it, too,” Marshall said. “We actually do objective yield plots. That is part of this indication; we get to see some of that information in this as well.”
The objective yield plots involve pulling samples from fields close to harvest to measure and compare grain weights.
Oklahoma saw no changes from last month’s Crop Production report. Oklahoma’s producers are still expected to harvest 2.75 million acres with a 39-bushel-per-acre yield. Production is still estimated to be down about 1 percent from last year at 107 million bushels. The difference, Marshall noted, is the amount of harvested acres.
“With some of the things that we’ve been seeing, that could change as producers finally get to the fields after some of these rains,” he said.
USDA’s reports have shown few days suitable for field work, and producers are just hoping for enough dry weather to harvest the crop.
Marshall also discussed this month’s numbers for Kansas and Texas, so be sure to click the listen bar at the top of the page to hear the complete conversation or view the summary below.
