Making the Season Merry and Bright: Service Oklahoma Provides Online Tools for Teens Seeking a Driver License

Service Oklahoma

Service Oklahoma knows the holiday season can bring equal parts celebration and stress, especially for families with teens preparing for their Learner Permit or Driver License. However, thanks to convenient online tools, stress can now be removed from the process.

This season, Service Oklahoma is helping to lighten the load and make it easier than ever for teens to take their first steps toward safe, independent driving. With new online tools that simplify every phase of the Graduated Driver License (GDL) Program, families can enjoy a smoother, less cumbersome experience. Oklahoma’s GDL Program gradually and safely guides teens through four key stages, from the written test to the final upgrade to an unrestricted license. Each step can be completed through a streamlined, digital-first pathway. By reducing the need for in-person visits, we’re delivering a modern and user-friendly approach for teens to earn a Driver License. The GDL Program was designed to help Oklahomans spend less time navigating lines and more time enjoying the holiday season.

Here are some of the many ways we’re using technology to make a teen’s first journey toward driving not just simpler but truly stress free.

Driver Study Hub
The online Driver Study Hub provides teens with the tools and resources they need to become a safe and confident driver. The new hub includes a practice written test, a link to the Oklahoma Driver Manual, a study guide, and resources for every step of a teen driver’s journey. This one-stop hub was designed to instill confidence and ensure everyone is road-ready. Learn more at service.ok.gov/study

Parent-Taught Driver Education
Families now have an alternative to using conventional Driver Education with Parent-Taught Driver Education. This is a great benefit for any teen or family who may not be located near a driving school or other driver education provider. Parents must fill out the online Parent-Taught Driver Education Affidavit Application to apply. Once approved to provide instruction, the teen and the parent can begin their education journey. Find out more at service.ok.gov/parenttaughtapp.

Oklahoma Written Test Online
The online Oklahoma Written Knowledge Test now allows teens to test from the comfort of home. The test can be taken on a desktop or laptop computer with secure online proctoring. After passing, teens can visit a Service Oklahoma location or licensed operator to receive their Learner Permit. To get started, visit service.ok.gov/writtentest

Sweet Sixteen Guarantee
Our Sweet Sixteen Guarantee is one of the first programs in the nation to offer a guaranteed drive test appointment on a teen’s 16th birthday, even on a Sunday. To qualify, teens must be 16 years old, have held a Learner Permit for at least 180 days, completed 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and passed the free, online Work Zone Safe course.

Drive tests are offered at Service Oklahoma’s dedicated Drive Test Centers in Oklahoma City and Broken Arrow. These centers provide a fast and efficient testing experience, and each features a selfie wall so families can celebrate this milestone birthday together.

Eligible teens, or their families, are encouraged to schedule their birthday drive test in advance at service.ok.gov/birthday

Online License Upgrade
Once a driver earns an Intermediate License, they can complete the final upgrade to an Unrestricted License entirely online. The online upgrade saves an extra in-person trip and removes restrictions on the hours they can drive and the number of passengers they can have in their vehicle. Visit us online and upgrade today.

Impact for Families
Since the launch of these new online tools, more than 13,500 teens have taken the online written test, and hundreds of families each month have used the digital upgrade tool.

“When a teen receives their Driver License, it’s a joyful time. Service Oklahoma is excited to be a part of that experience, and we are committed to making it as smooth as possible, for the teen and for the parent,” said Diedra O’Neil, Chief Executive of Strategy and Operations at Service Oklahoma. “Through the modernization of the teen driver journey, we’ve made the process far less overwhelming. We remain dedicated to providing Oklahoma’s teens with efficient solutions that also help them build safe and confident habits behind the wheel.”
