The U.S. Meat Export Federation is using the global stage at Gulfood in Dubai this week to spotlight U.S. beef, pork and lamb, reinforcing the Middle East’s importance as a key growth market. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom says the UAE remains the region’s largest export value market for U.S. beef and is once again front and center after full market access was restored in 2025 following earlier challenges tied to halal certification procedures.
Halstrom notes that exports to the UAE were effectively shut down for several months beginning in late 2024, but a temporary resolution after Gulfood last year led to a finalized agreement by August, fully reopening the market. With access restored, this year’s show provides a critical opportunity to meet directly with buyers, rebuild momentum, and expand business. He also credited USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service for playing an integral role in helping regain market access and reconnect with buyers.
Beyond the Middle East, Halstrom emphasized Gulfood’s value as a truly global event that aligns with USMEF’s strategy to diversify international demand for U.S. red meat. Buyers from across Africa—including Morocco, West Africa, Central Africa, and South Africa—are well represented, alongside growing participation from Southeast Asia and North Asia. Increasing attendance from Japanese, Korean, and Chinese buyers underscores Gulfood’s role as a global hub for advancing U.S. meat exports worldwide.
