Chickasha Wheat & Forages Field Day Coming up April 24th

The Oklahoma State University Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has announced the 2026 Wheat and Forages Field Day, scheduled for Friday, April 24. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Central Research Station located at 1105 E. Iowa Ave. in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

The program is designed to provide producers and industry professionals with the latest updates on small grain production, genetics, and market trends. The schedule features a comprehensive look at the current wheat landscape, beginning with a wheat variety trial and a demonstration of the wheat rover.

Research and Breeding Innovations

A significant portion of the day will focus on the development of new genetics and variety performance. Amanda Silva, associate professor and Extension specialist for small grains, will lead discussions on wheat variety trials. Participants will also gain insight into candidate lines currently in the OSU pipeline, presented by Brett Carver, professor and wheat breeding and genetics chair, and assistant professor Meriem Aoun.

Further deep dives into specialized genetics will include:

  • CoAXium Wheat Genetics: An overview of the OSU elite nurseries presented by Brett Carver and Jeff Wright, OFSS coordinator of production operations.
  • Small Grains for Forages: State forages specialist Brian Pugh will discuss the utilization of small grains in forage systems.

Management and Marketing

In addition to plant breeding, the field day will address critical management and economic factors. Steve Phillips, the Nutrients for Life Foundation professor of soil fertility, will present on nitrogen management specifically for dual-purpose wheat systems. To help producers navigate the economic environment, assistant professor and Extension specialist Todd Hubbs will provide a wheat market overview.
