The Oklahoma Legislature has not included funding for the new Agronomy Research Station (Agronomy Discovery Center) in the general state budget passed here in April. However, there is still an active effort this week to secure this funding through a standalone bill before the 2026 legislative session adjourns.
HB4054 was considered in committees in both the House and Senate on Monday afternoon- passing the Joint Committee on Appropriations and Budget Committee 21 to 2. It moved on and was approved a couple of hours later Monday night in the Senate Joint Committee on Appropriations and Budget 20 to 1. The Oklahoma Farm Report has been told it should be considered by the full House as early as Today (Tuesday)
According to the language in the measure, “the Oklahoma Capitol Improvement Authority is authorized to utilize
available funds from the Legacy Capital Financing Fund created by Section 187B of Title 73 of the Oklahoma Statutes, in the amount of Forty Million Dollars ($40,000,000.00) for the benefit of Oklahoma State University to construct, refurbish, or expand facilities related to the study and practice of agronomy.”
This appropriation, if approved by the legislature and the Governor, would augment the dollars already pledged by groups like Oklahoma Genetics and the Oklahoma Wheat Commission a couple of years ago. The wheat breeding facilities that are seen as you arrive in Stillwater on State Highway 51 date back to the 1930s-1960s and are no longer sufficient for modern research.
“The work conducted at the Agronomy Research Station really matters, greatly affecting both producers and consumers throughout Oklahoma and beyond,” said Dr. Jayson Lusk, vice president and dean of OSU Agriculture. “We are doing state-of-the-art research, but we are doing it in antiquated facilities. The Agronomy Discovery Center will provide the infrastructure we need to compete in the modern era and achieve our mission of feeding the world.
