A major Food for Peace shipment moved out of Skyland Grain in western Kansas this week, with 400,000 bushels of U.S. sorghum loaded for shipment to Africa. NSP Chair Amy France, board member Jim Sipes and NSP staff were on-site to highlight the shipment and capture photos of sorghum moving into this important food assistance channel.
The shipment was quickly elevated in Washington, as Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., highlighted the sorghum movement during a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. Moran shared photos from the loading site and thanked Rollins for her leadership in moving Food for Peace to USDA. The shipment is especially notable because it marks the first Food for Peace sorghum shipment since USDA took over administration of the program within the past year. NSP continues to support Food for Peace as an important tool for connecting U.S.-grown commodities with international food assistance needs while strengthening demand opportunities for American farmers.
