IGCAST Crop Population Expert Highlights Global Sorghum Conference

For the first time in its history, the Global Sorghum Conference will be held in the U.S. Lubbock, Texas, will be the capital of the sorghum world Sept. 14-18, a premier gathering of global experts, researchers, producers and industry leaders dedicated to advancing sorghum science and its pivotal role in sustainable agriculture.

This is a chance for the media to discuss with some of the most widely recognized experts in the sorghum industry all in one place. The conference includes presentations, hands-on workshops, networking events, award ceremonies, field tours and more.

One expert who will be at the conference is Yinping Jiao, an associate professor of crop population genomics within the Institute of Genomics for Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance (IGCAST) at Texas Tech University. Jiao devotes her research to using genomic approaches to better understand the genetic diversity and regulatory mechanisms of important agricultural traits, with the goal of facilitating breeding. This area of research is vital to developing new and better ways of genomic crop breeding and can help produce better sorghum production with bigger yields.

Her research identifies the genes and pathways that control important genomic traits and explores how genetic variation and genome structure lead to diverse crop form and structure to expand adaptation of cultivated crops to climate change.
