The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its September Crop Production report, updating forecasts for major U.S. crops following a review of acreage and conditions as of September 1. August brought mixed weather conditions across key United States agricultural regions. Warmer-than-normal temperatures dominated most of the Pacific Coast, Rockies, and southern Plains. Much of the central Plains and lower Mississippi Valley also experienced modest warmth. In contrast, the northern Plains, upper Mississippi Valley, and Ohio Valley recorded near- to slightly below-normal temperatures. Precipitation patterns were highly variable. Much of the Delta, central and southern Plains, Southwest, and West recorded below-normal rainfall, with some locations receiving less than 50 percent of normal monthly totals. Drier-than-normal conditions also persisted across parts of the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes.
Corn: Acreage updates were made based on a thorough review of all available data. Total planted area, at 96.8 million acres, is up slightly from the previous estimate but down 2 percent from 2025. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 88.5 million acres, down less than one percent from the previous forecast and down 3 percent from last year. Production for grain is forecast at 15.8 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 7 percent from last year. If realized, this would be the second highest production for grain on record for the United States. Based on conditions as of September 1, the yield is forecast at 178.5 bushels per acre, down 2.2 bushels from the previous forecast and down 8.0 bushels from last year’s record high 186.5 bushels per acre.

Cotton: Acreage updates were made based on a thorough review of all available data. All cotton planted area totaled 10.5 million acres, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast but up 13 percent from 2025. All cotton area harvested is forecast at 8.16 million acres, down less than 1 percent but up 4 percent from 2025. Area planted to Upland cotton is estimated at 10.3 million acres, down less than 1 percent from the previous estimate but up 13 percent from 2025. Upland harvested area for the Nation is expected to total 8.03 million acres, down less than 1 percent from the previous month but up 4 percent from last year. Pima cotton planted area is estimated at 141,000 acres, down 5 percent from the previous forecast and down less than 1 percent from 2025. Pima harvested area is forecast at 136,700 acres, down 5 percent from the previous month and down 1 percent from last year.

Soybeans: Acreage updates were made based on a thorough review of all available data. Total planted area, at 86.9 million acres, is up less than 1 percent from the previous estimate and up 7 percent from the previous year. Acreage harvested for beans is forecast at 85.9 million acres, up less than 1 percent from the previous forecast and up 7 percent from last year. Production is forecast at a record 4.53 billion bushels, up less than 1 percent from the previous estimate and up 6 percent from 2025. The forecasted yield, at 52.8 bushels per acre, is down 0.2 bushel from last year’s final estimate of 53.0 bushels per acre. If realized, this would be the second highest yield on record for the Nation.

Sorghum: Acreage updates were made following a thorough review of all available data. Production is forecast at 284 million bushels, down 4 percent from the previous forecast and down 35 percent from last year. Planted area, at 5.98 million acres, is down 2 percent from the previous estimate and down 10 percent from last year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 5.23 million acres, down 2 percent from the previous forecast and down 13 percent from 2025. Based on September 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 54.4 bushels per acre, 1.0 bushel below the previous forecast and 18.2 bushels below the 2025 yield of 72.6 bushels per acre.
