An October Surprise- New World Screwworm Cases Jump to 12 Active Cases- Mainly in New Mexico

New World Screwworm Fly

After a quiet period of almost no New World Screwworm positive cases in August and September- the second half of October has suddenly seen 12 active cases of New World Screwworm- all livestock cases reported this past week. Most of those cases have been found in New Mexico.

Two cases were reported on Friday in Hudspeth County, Texas. The stretches from the Rio Grande, bordering Mexico to the south and the Texas- New Mexico border to it’s north. The county in New Mexico that they share the state line with is Otero County- which currently has one bovine(cattle case) active- plus that was the county where the elk was reported by a hunter last week- that case is now called inactive.

The first cases of New World Screwworm were reported back on June third- with these latest cases- we now have 65 livestock, 1 wildlife and 1 trapped fly cases that have been reported in Texas and New Mexico. Fourteen of those cases have been reported here in the month of October.
