Previously announced, 50% duties on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect. These tariffs were imposed using authorities under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. In response, the Agricultural Coalition for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement spokesperson Bryan Goodman released the following statement:
“We appreciate U.S. and Canadian leaders’ efforts to address sectoral trade irritants and encourage both governments to continue negotiations with the goal of resolving their disagreements as soon as possible. In the meantime, we encourage the Trump administration to exempt all products covered under USMCA from these duties.
“We have consistently said that USMCA is one of the president’s signature achievements and contributions to American agriculture. And we have advocated for renewal of the trilateral agreement with targeted improvements, which will help protect American farmers while preventing these types of internecine trade disputes in the future.”
