Appaloosa Horse Club Moves Headquarters to Oklahoma City Stockyards

The Appaloosa Horse Club has moved its headquarters to Oklahoma City’s historic Stockyards, placing the breed registry in a central location for the horse industry. Speaking with associate farm reporter Carli Davenport, Shanell Ruter and Lex Smurthwaite explained the organization’s history, services for horse owners and the variety of competitions and activities it offers Appaloosa enthusiasts.

The Appaloosa Horse Club was established to serve as a breed registry, tracking horses’ pedigrees, ownership and performance records. The Appaloosa breed originated in the Northwest with the Nez Perce tribe, and its name comes from the Palouse River region of northwestern Idaho. “The Appaloosa Horse Club was established as a breed registry for Appaloosa horses,” Smurthwaite explained. “We register horses like you would register an automobile, We keep track of their pedigrees, keep track of the ownerships, and we do transfer of owners.”

The registry also maintains records of horses’ past performances in competitions, including horse shows and racing.

Oklahoma City Provides a Central Location for the Horse Industry

The club’s move to the historic Oklahoma City Stockyards followed a decision by its membership. According to the representatives, the board of directors put the proposal to a vote, and members overwhelmingly supported relocating the headquarters to Oklahoma City.

The city’s established presence in the horse industry made it an attractive destination for the organization. “Oklahoma City is kind of considered the headquarters of a lot of horse activity, especially showing shows and stuff like that,” Smurthwaite said. “So, the location is a great choice for us.”

They also expressed enthusiasm about becoming part of the Stockyards community. “Yes, we are very proud to be in Oklahoma City and be part of the Stockyards and to have our club here,” Ruter said.

Appaloosa Horse Club Offers Shows and Competitions

For Appaloosa horse owners, the organization provides opportunities to compete in a range of events throughout the year.

The club hosts major shows, including its National Championship Show and Youth World Championship Show, which are held together during the summer. These competitions give Appaloosa horses and their owners opportunities to participate in different disciplines.

The events include everything from barrel racing and pleasure horse competitions to roping. The organization also sponsors a World Championship Show each fall in Fort Worth, Texas, providing another major opportunity for Appaloosa competitors. Beyond its championship shows, the club supports racing activities, trail riding and distance competitions, allowing owners to participate in activities outside the traditional show ring.

Preserving Appaloosa History Through Trail Riding

The Appaloosa Horse Club also offers a historical trail ride known as the Chief Joseph Trail Ride, which takes participants through parts of northwestern Idaho and Montana.

The ride focuses on the history of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe. The historical ride connects the Appaloosa breed to its origins and the Native American history associated with the horse.

Through its registry services, championship shows, racing opportunities and trail-riding programs, the Appaloosa Horse Club continues to support the breed while helping owners preserve its history and participate in the equine industry.
