Winter Wheat Conditions Hold Steady in the Southern Plains This Week- Texas Begins Harvest

U.S. Crop Progress:

Winter wheat headed reached 57 percent, up 11 percentage points from the previous year and up 13 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 18 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were 50 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair, and 16 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, winter wheat ratings for the U.S. were at 29 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 41 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 49 percent, down 11 percentage points from the previous year and down 5 points from the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 23 percent, down 2 percentage points from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average.

Soybeans planted reached 35 percent, down 10 percentage points from the previous year and up 1 point from the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached 16 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 6 points from the five-year average.

Cotton planted reached 33 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and the five-year average.

Sorghum planted reached 26 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and even with the five-year average.

Oklahoma Crop Progress:

Winter wheat headed reached 95 percent, up 28 points from the previous week and up 13 points from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 41 percent fair, and 7 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 51 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 74 percent, up 23 points from the previous week and from normal. Corn emerged reached 49 percent, up 17 points from the previous week and up 18 points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 22 percent, up 8 points from the previous week and up 9 points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 15 percent, up 8 points from the previous week but down 6 points from normal.

Peanuts planted reached 13 percent, up 8 points from the previous week but unchanged from normal.

Cotton planted reached 12 percent, up 7 points from the previous week, unchanged from normal.

Livestock conditions rated 71 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair, and 5 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 70 percent good to excellent, 25 percent fair and 5 percent poor to very poor. 

Pasture and range conditions rated 53 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 11 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 52 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 10 percent poor to very poor.

Texas Crop Progress:

Winter wheat headed reached 88 percent, up 6 percentage points from the previous year and up 3 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat harvested reached 5 percent, up 1 percentage point from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 42 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 23 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s conditions rated 48 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 28 percent fair and 52 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 80 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 percentage point from the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 69 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and even with the average. Corn silked reached 18 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 8 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 66 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 8 percent poor to very poor.

Cotton planted reached 28 percent, even with the previous year and the five-year average.

Peanuts planted reached 17 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average.

Sorghum planted reached 74 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and even with the five-year average.

Soybeans planted reached 38 percent, down 9 points from the previous year down 17 points from the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached 19 percent, down 8 points from the previous year and up 2 points from the five-year average.

Kansas Crop Progress:

Winter wheat headed reached 73 points, up 25 points from the previous year and up 30 points from the five-year average. Winter wheat conditions rated 31 percent good to excellent, 32 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor. Last week’s ratings were 32 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, winter wheat ratings in Kansas were at 10 percent good to excellent, 22 percent fair and 68 percent poor to very poor.

Corn planted reached 61 percent, up 4 percentage points from the previous year and up 5 points from the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 41 percent, up 10 points from the previous year and up 12 points from the average.

Soybeans planted reached 33 percent, down 5 percentage points from the previous year and up 7 points from the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached 13 points, down 1 point from the previous year and up 6 points from the average.

Cotton planted reached 18 percent, down 8 percentage points from the previous year and down 2 points from the five-year average.

Sorghum planted reached 7 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 3 points from the average.
