Oklahoma Braces for Early Warmup, Potential Triple-Digit Temperatures

Oklahoma is gearing up for a significant temperature spike, with the possibility of seeing triple-digit heat unusually early in the season. According to State Climatologist Gary McManus, a “big warmup” is on the horizon for the state.

This potential jump into triple digits this weekend would be notably ahead of schedule. As McManus pointed out, “We didn’t see a hundred last year until May 20 when Altus hit 100, and even that was right on course for Altus’ normal date for their first 100 of May 19. So a bit of a rarity for an April 13 eruption.”

While the possibility of hitting 100 degrees on Saturday exists, McManus suggests it might not quite reach that mark. He noted, “It’s possible, but maybe not quite getting there.”

However, the heat won’t be sticking around indefinitely. McManus indicated a temporary reprieve, stating, “And then a cooldown before we’re back in the frying pan eventually.”

In some welcome news, the forecast also includes much-needed precipitation. “At least some rain is showing up finally,” McManus added, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the anticipated warmth.

Key Takeaways:

  • Oklahoma is expecting a significant warmup.
  • There is a possibility of triple-digit temperatures as early as this weekend, which would be unusual for mid-April.
  • Last year, the first 100-degree day in Altus occurred on May 20th, aligning with the normal date.
  • A cooldown is expected after the initial heat surge.
  • The forecast includes some much-needed rain for the state.
