Kelton Arthur Claims Grand Champion Market Steer Honors at Tulsa State Fair Night of Champions

Kelton Arthur reached the pinnacle of the Tulsa State Fair Night of Champions by capturing the title of Grand Champion Market Steer. Speaking ringside with intern Haden Snelson following the banner win, Arthur reflected on the dedication required to secure the top spot after finishing as Reserve Grand Champion two years prior.

“I thought I had a pretty nice calf a couple years ago and just came up, obviously, a tad short,” Arthur said. “And so I’ve been grinding away trying to finally claim the title, and so it does for sure make this one a little extra sweeter.”

Arthur recognized the potential in his steer early on when he first saw him at his homestead. With standout features and eye-catching color, the steer immediately set himself apart.

“First time I saw him at the house dad brought him home, and then it was just kind of one of those things that with the cool color and the feature, I knew I had to have him,” Arthur explained. “And so I kind of said he was off-limits to anyone else. Obviously, we showed him a little, and he’s always just had that persona around him that he knew he was going to be good one day.”

Livestock exhibiting is a family effort for Arthur, and while the victory carries deep meaning for everyone involved, he credited his mother as the emotional foundation of the team.  “I get pretty emotional from time to time, but I’d probably say my mom will get the most emotional of all of us,” Arthur said. “Me and my dad share a lot of memories, and mom supports us through that with all our random activities. She holds us together.”

When asked what advice he would pass along to younger exhibitors watching from the stands who aspire to reach the champion drive, Arthur stressed that resilience in the show ring is everything.

“Persistency. In showing cattle especially, you’re going to fall short more times than you are going to hit your goal. And so just know that every time you come short, you’re that one step closer to finally hitting that benchmark,” Arthur said. “Look at me, I’ve shown here numerous times and it took me till my very last try to finally conquer the gauntlet. So just keep at it. Persistency’s key, for sure.”

The Tulsa State Fair’s annual Night of Champions brought the state’s top 4-H and FFA livestock exhibitors together Wednesday night at the Ford Truck Arena in Tulsa. The event serves as the culmination of the fair’s junior livestock competition, celebrating the hard work of Oklahoma’s young agricultural exhibitors while awarding Grand and Reserve Grand Champion honors across several livestock divisions. This year’s event recognized 150 Oklahoma 4-H and FFA youth and highlighted the dedication of exhibitors, families, agricultural educators and mentors who helped bring these projects to the show ring.
